Ships Referenced in the John Atwood Jr. & Co. Packing Book, 1863-1868
An index of ship's referenced in a journal kept by John W. Atwood of the mackerel (and occasionally other fish, including bay scallops and swordfish) caught by vessels of the John Atwood Jr & Co. fleet between August 10, 1863 and October 28, 1868. The Journal identifies the vessels and crew (by initials or personal symbols), the day the ship came in, and the quantity of mackerel by size in barrels and pounds, and the price per size. The Journal shows significant catches in the beginning that fell off after mid-1860's. A transcript of the journal can be found in this collection on the website. Transcription by Provincetown History Project Volunteer Julia L. Perry.
